Harding’s Japanese program currently offers 6 levels of Japanese classes. Click each level for more information:
Japanese 1
This course will set a foundation for essential understanding of Japanese communication as students will learn basic Japanese for conversation and writing. Students will be provided insight into Japanese culture, pop culture, and history.
Themes that are focused on in level one include: talking about oneself, school, weather, and family. The two Japanese writing systems will be taught along with an introduction to about 40 Chinese characters.

Japanese 2
Building on from Japanese 1, students will expand their ability to communicate effectively and continue their study on Japanese culture, pop culture, and history. Japanese 2 students will be able to compare and contrast their life in Saint Paul with that of a Japanese high school student. This course prepares students for entering Japanese 3. Level 2 is mandatory for college entrance for students who are college bound.
Themes that are included in this course are: school, describing people and family, shopping, clothing, and aspects of daily life. Approximately 150 new Chinese characters will be introduced to students.

IB DP Japanese 3
Level 3 is a critical year in learning conversational Japanese. Students will learn to speak and write in a less formal (and in a more commonly spoken) version of the language. This is an honors course. Three years of Japanese is highly recommended for college bound students.
Students will be able to read stories, debate about issues facing high school students today, write about their future plans, and interact with Japanese in newspapers. Approximately 200 Chinese characters will be introduced.

All modalities of the language will continue to be reinforced. This is an honors course. IB DP Japanese 4 students will prepare for the International Baccalaureate Japanese Language examination. Levels 4, 5, and 7 share a joint class.
Students will practice writing essays, letters, stories, and accounts. Themes will include health and wellness, emergency situations, home stay experiences, and the environment. Formal Japanese language styles will also be presented. Approximately 300 Chinese characters will be introduced.

IB DP Japanese 5
Students in Japanese IB DP Japanese 5 take the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Japanese Language examination. This is an honors course. Levels 4, 5, and 7 share a joint class.
This course will cover extensive grammatical patterns and advances vocabulary. Japanese texts will be read as independent study projects. Approximately 300 Chinese characters will be introduced.

Students will continue their in-depth study of Japanese. This is an honors class. Levels 4, 5, and 6 share a joint class.
